Mesothelioma Treatments

Ever since people have started learning about the dangers of asbestos, mesothelioma has become a major concern for many people. Mesothelioma is a lethal cancer but the prognosis of the several treatments in use to cure this disease may be better than is often mentioned. This article will discuss the different types of treatments used to cure mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma Surgical Treatment
Surgery can be used to remove the dangerous cancer cells. Laparoscopy, mediastinoscopy, video-assisted thoracic surgery and thoracoscopy are examples of surgical treatments which can be used. Surgery is also used to make a diagnosis.

Palliative Treatment
This is a treatment which specifically deals with the symptoms rather than the disease. Chest tube drainage is the most common type of palliative treatment used not only does it help relieve the symptoms it also prevents pleural effusion, which is very common among  mesothelioma patients, from recurring. There are a number of other palliative treatments.

Curative Treatments
When it is intended to completely remove mesothelioma, these procedures, which include radical surgery and chemotherapy, are performed.

Chemotherapy
Mesothelioma, like all other cancers, may also be treated using chemotherapy although for mesothelioma patients this is not considered a curative treatment and may just be used to relieve the symptoms, control the cancer or perform as part of a combination involving other forms of treatment.

A number of different procedures may be used to treat mesothelioma. Some of which attempt to cure the disease once and for all and while others try to relieve the symptoms. These procedures include chemotherapy, surgery and other medical procedures. To get the best results for the patient a combination of methods may also be used.
